How to Do Short Division (No Remainders)

This lesson teaches short division, a way to divide by a one-digit number that some people prefer over long division. Mr DJ boxes the number, splits it into one box per digit, asks how many times the divisor "hops into" each box and carries what's left to the next box. His main example is 846 ÷ 3 = 282, followed by 8,324 ÷ 4 and 4,716 ÷ 6.

Step by step

  1. Box the number

For 846 ÷ 3, draw a box around 846. Then draw a line between the 8 and the 4 and another between the 4 and the 6, so each digit has its own box.

    ▶ Watch this step 0:24
  2. Ask how many times it hops in

Start with the first box: how many times does 3 hop into 8? It hops in 2 times, so write a 2 above the 8.

    ▶ Watch this step 0:24
  3. Carry what's left

Mr DJ says the 8 wanted 8, but we could only give it 6, because 2 × 3 = 6. 8 − 6 = 2 is left over. Write that 2 small, next to the 4 in the next box, so that box now reads 24.

    ▶ Watch this step 0:47
  4. Hop into the new number

3 hops into 24 eight times, because 8 × 3 = 24. Nothing is left over, so write a 0 next to the 6 in the last box.

    ▶ Watch this step 0:47
  5. Finish the last box

3 hops into 6 two times perfectly, with nothing left. Read the digits on top: 846 ÷ 3 = 282.

    ▶ Watch this step 1:18
  6. Write 0 when it can't hop in

In 8,324 ÷ 4, four hops into 8 two times with 0 carried. Four hops into 3 zero times, so the whole 3 carries over to make 32. Four hops into 32 eight times, then into 4 one time, giving 2,081.

    ▶ Watch this step 2:12
  7. Keep carrying the difference

    For 4,716 ÷ 6, six can't hop into 4, so carry the 4 to make 47. Six hops in 7 times (42), and 5 carries to make 51. Six hops in 8 times (48), 3 carries to make 36, and six hops into 36 six times. 4,716 ÷ 6 = 786.

    ▶ Watch this step 3:24

“They wanted 51 but we were able to give them 48. There's a difference of three there. So the three has to carry over.”

Problem: Find 952 ÷ 4 using short division.

  1. Box 952 and draw lines between the 9 and 5 and between the 5 and 2.
  2. 4 hops into 9 two times (2 × 4 = 8). 9 − 8 = 1 left, so carry the 1 to make 15.
  3. 4 hops into 15 three times (3 × 4 = 12). 15 − 12 = 3 left, so carry the 3 to make 32.
  4. 4 hops into 32 eight times (8 × 4 = 32). Nothing is left.
  5. Read the digits on top: 2, 3, 8.

Answer: 952 ÷ 4 = 238

Check: 238 × 4 = 952.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to carry the leftover, so the next box is just 4 instead of 24. After each hop, find what's left and write it small in front of the next digit.
  • Carrying the amount you gave instead of what's left (carrying 6 instead of 2). Subtract first: the box wanted 8 and you gave 6, so carry 8 − 6 = 2.
  • Leaving out the 0 on top when the divisor can't hop into a digit in the middle of the number. Write 0 above that digit and carry the whole digit over. In 8,324 ÷ 4 that 0 matters: the answer is 2,081.

Questions

What is short division?

Short division is a way to divide by a one-digit number. You box the number, give each digit its own box, and carry whatever is left from one box into the next. Mr DJ says some people really prefer it over long division.

What do you do in short division when the divisor doesn't go into a digit?

It hops in zero times, so write 0 on top and carry the whole digit into the next box. In 8,324 ÷ 4, four can't hop into 3, so the 3 carries over to make 32.

0:02 Hi everybody. Welcome back to Math with Mr. DJ. Today we're going to be talking about short division. If you don't if you don't know short division, great. We can learn it today. And some people really prefer it over long division. If you've heard of it before and you just need a refresher, I'm going to help you out there as well. Let's start off with 846 divided by 3. All right. I like to start it off by boxing uh the 846. So putting just kind of like a box around it. in putting a line through the eight and the four and the four and the six. Um, and then here's what we're going to do. We're going to do say how many times does three hop into eight? Well, three hops into eight two times. So, put a little two up here. So, three hops into eight two times. Um, for

0:47 six. They wanted eight. We were able to give them six. And as you can see, uh, 8 minus 6 is two. So, that means we had two remaining. So that two needs to come up here next to the four. And there's a two and the four in the next box. And that's going to give us that's going to make 24 for the next um hop. So now three hops into 24. Hops in eight times. Okay. And 8 × 3 is 24. It they wanted 24. We we gave them 24. There's nothing remaining. So this one's going to be a zero next to the six. Now the last step is 3 into six. Three humps into six two times perfectly. Uh nothing remaining. So

1:34 uh goes in two times. 846 / 3 is 282. All right, let's move on to the next one. Let's do uh 8,324 divided by four. All right, let's try this one. So remember the first step is you want to box it. Here we go. Let's put a box around it. Put some lines between the eight and the three, the three and the two, and the two and the four. Okay. And then we'll start off by saying, all right, how many times does four hop into eight? Well, it hops into eight two times. 2 × 4 is eight. They wanted eight. We were able to give them eight. That means zero carries over. Okay. Um,

2:20 here we'll put that zero carries over. Now, we're going to say, all right, how many times does four hop into three? Well, four hops into three zero times. Okay, they wanted three. We gave them zero groups of four for zero. So, we had three remaining. So, that means the three needs to come over there. Gets carried over. And that next box is 32. So, we'll say now four hops into 32. Well, four hops into 32 eight times because 8* 4 is 32. They wanted 32. We were able to give them 32. There's going to be nothing uh carried over to the next box. And then the last one is um four items four hop into four. Well, four hops into four one time. So 8,324

3:10 / 4 is 281. Done. All right, let's move on to the next one. Um, all right. Let's do uh 4,716 divided by six. All right. So, let's box this. Here we go. And line in between the four and the seven. Seven and the one and the one and the six. And let's start it. Let's start it off. I'm done. Six hop into four. Six doesn't hop into four, right? It's it's um it's too large. So, it hops in zero times. uh they wanted four and we gave them zero groups of six for zero. So there's four left over. So that four has to carry over to that seven. Now 6 hops into 47. It hops in seven

3:57 times. 7 × 6 is 42. And it wanted 47 and we gave them 42. So that's five remaining. So that five that five needs to go right there next to the one. And that's 51 now. And so we say 6 hops into 51 8 times because 8 × 6 is 48. They wanted 51 but we were able to give them 48. There's a difference of three there. So the three has to carry over. Now in the last box um oop sorry we did this one. Yep. And this one. And now we're in the last one here. Okay. 6 goes into 36 six times. 6 × 6 is 36. They wanted 36. We're able to give them 36. So there's nothing remaining. So 4,716 / 6

4:50 is 786. Now that's that's short division without remainders. Let me know in the comments if you if you like short division. Do you prefer long division? Um or if there's other videos that you uh want me to make. Uh don't forget to like and subscribe. And um thank you as always. Take care.
