Watch: Surface Area of Prisms — Step by Step Guide
Key idea
Surface area = the total area of all faces. Rectangular prism: six faces, three pairs. Triangular prism: five. General rule: SA = 2B + Ph — two bases, plus the band around the outside. Units are squared.
Sample problems
- Find the surface area of a box 6 by 3 by 2.
- Find the volume of that box.
- Find the surface area of a cube with edge 4.
- Find the volume of that cube.
Common mistakes to watch for
- Added only 20 + 12 + 15 = 47, counting three faces instead of six. The answer is exactly half, which is the fingerprint.
- Compared 94 and 60 as though one should be larger. They answer different questions and cannot be ranked.
- Applied the six-face rectangular formula, or forgot to halve the triangular ends.
The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.
How to use this set
- Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes), or watch the video together.
- Practice with the worksheet. Questions climb from fluency to application to reasoning.
- Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
- Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake.
