Key idea

V = Bh. Find the area of the base first, then multiply by the height or length. For composite solids, split into prisms and add — or find the whole and subtract what is missing. Never add a removed piece.

Sample problems

  1. Find the volume of a box 6 by 3 by 2.
  2. Find the volume of a box 6 by 3 by 4.
  3. Those two boxes are stacked, matching 6 by 3 faces. Find the total volume.
  4. Find the volume of a single box 6 by 3 by 6. What do you notice?

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Added the edges, or used square units. Volume is always cubic.
  • Added the heights AND the volumes, double counting. Pick one method: add the volumes, or combine into one solid.
  • Answered 120 by multiplying all three numbers. The triangular base must be halved before it is used.

The answer key explains each one, so you can tell what a wrong answer means.

How to use this set

  1. Teach with the slides (about 15 minutes): a warm-up, the big ideas, a “spot the slip” challenge, Mr DJ’s worked example, and a pick-your-pepper round on whiteboards. Or watch the video together.
  2. Practice with the worksheet. Everyone does Mild and Medium, then climbs to Spicy and Extra Spicy.
  3. Check understanding with the exit ticket, and send the homework home.
  4. Mark with the answer key — each answer shows the steps and the most likely mistake. The slides’ teacher notes are in the key too.
